Optimal Nutrition and Development for Preterm Infants: New Research and Implications

William W. Hay, Jr., MD, of the University of Colorado Denver, and Berthold Koletzko, MD, PhD, of Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich, Germany, review recent research on nutritional and feeding requirements in preterm infants as well as the implications for clinical practice. Dr. Hay begins the symposium with an update on the nutritional requirements of preterm infants relative to the normal requirements for fetal growth. Dr. Koletzko then reviews the nutritional care of the preterm infant, including strategies for optimizing nutrition in stable, very low-birth-weight infants receiving exclusive enteral feeds. These talks are followed by a lively question-and-answer session. This enduring activity is based on a CE symposium presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies annual meeting held May 5, 2014, in Vancouver, British Columbia.
